From humble roots to Pan-African recognition: Sarat Braimah’s inspiring leadership journey

In a fitting tribute to years of dedication, resilience and transformative public service, Engineer Sarat Braimah, Lagos Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), has been honoured with the prestigious Nelson Mandela Pan-African Leadership Award by the Stay Africa Youth Development Initiative (SAYDI).

The Accra, Ghana-based organisation formally presented the award in Lagos, describing the recognition as a celebration of Braimah’s unwavering commitment to national development, ethical leadership and youth empowerment within Africa’s maritime space.

A Journey in Merit and Hard Work

Engineer Braimah’s rise to leadership is widely regarded as a story of perseverance and merit. Rising steadily through the ranks in the maritime sector, she built her reputation on discipline, technical competence and an unyielding commitment to excellence. Her educational background in engineering laid a solid foundation for her career, equipping her with the analytical depth and practical expertise that now define her administrative leadership.

According to SAYDI President, Ambassador Dominic Mensah, the Nigerian chapter of the organisation nominated Braimah following visible improvements recorded at the NIWA Lagos Area Office since she assumed leadership.

He cited enhanced operational efficiency, improved stakeholder engagement and her transparent management style as hallmarks of her tenure. Her zero-tolerance stance on nepotism and favouritism, coupled with her insistence on professionalism, has reportedly strengthened confidence in the agency’s Lagos operations.

Beyond administration, Braimah has actively supported youth development initiatives and mentorship programmes, encouraging students and young professionals — especially women — to explore careers in the maritime and blue economy sectors.

Previous Recognitions and Industry Impact

Before this continental honour, Engineer Braimah had received commendations from professional bodies and maritime stakeholders for her contributions to inland waterways safety and operational reforms through such awards as — Most Influential Woman in Maritime Award (2025): Awarded by the Commonwealth Business Women Africa (CBW-Africa) for her role as a mentor, Maritime and Blue Economy Woman of the Year (2024): Honored by the African Women in Maritime Organization (AWIMO) and Maritime Excellence Award(2023) by the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria(AMJON).

Other awards and achievements include: Doctorate Degree (Honoris Causa) (2022): Awarded by Prowess University, Delaware, USA, in recognition of her professional achievements. Maritime Woman of the Year Award(2025) by Maritime Industry Merit Awards and other awards numerous to mention.

Industry observers note that her leadership has consistently aligned with broader national goals of strengthening Nigeria’s marine and blue economy framework.

Her induction into the Pan-African Leadership Hall of Fame further cements her growing reputation as one of the notable female figures in Africa’s maritime governance landscape.

Sarat’s Leadership Philosophy Rooted in Service

Presenting the award, Ambassador Mensah explained that SAYDI’s mission is to identify and inspire Africa’s emerging leaders who choose to remain on the continent and contribute meaningfully to its development.

“Our core objective is to identify tomorrow’s leaders today by inspiring and educating young Africans to stay and build sustainable systems across all sectors. Mentorship is central to that vision, and leaders like Engineer Braimah provide living examples of what is possible,” he said.

In her acceptance remarks, a visibly appreciative Braimah described the award as both humbling and motivating.

“I sincerely thank you for this honour, which I do not take for granted. It will inspire me to do even more for my organisation, Nigeria and Africa’s maritime development,” she said.

She dedicated the award to her superiors at NIWA headquarters in Abuja and to her Lagos team, acknowledging their sacrifices and collective commitment.
