Tincan Customs invests in staff development with comprehensive training programme

In a bid to boost operational efficiency, the Nigerian Customs Service(NCS), Tincan Command has concluded a comprehensive training programme for its senior officers, focusing on key areas such as customs procedures and risk management.

The week-long in-house training, conducted within the Command premises, brought together officers from various units and departments to strengthen core competencies and operational efficiency.

At the opening ceremony, Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka highlighted the significance of continuous learning and capacity development, urging officers to seize the opportunity to enhance their skills and stay updated on evolving operational demands.

He stated, “This training is not just a routine exercise but an investment in the growth of the personnel of the Service. I urge all officers to apply the knowledge gained to their daily responsibilities and strive for excellence in service delivery.”

He added that while the recent session targeted senior officers, plans are underway to organize a similar training programme for junior officers soon, ensuring inclusive capacity development across all cadres in the Command’s pursuit of enhanced efficiency and professionalism.

In a release signed by CSC Oscar Ivara, Public Relations Officer(PRO), Tincan Customs Command, resource persons for the programme were drawn from within the Command, reflecting the depth of knowledge and experience available internally. Key topics covered during the sessions included: Physical Examination which was handled by the Customs Area Controller, Reputation Management, Risk Management and Documentary Checks, Evidence Exploitation, Customs Procedure Codes and Customs Classification.

Others included VIN Valuation, Customs Valuation, Code of Conduct, Customs Administration among others.

In his closing remarks, Comptroller Onyeka reiterated the Command’s commitment to developing a highly skilled, knowledgeable, and proactive workforce equipped to tackle the evolving demands of modern customs operations.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the high-quality training sessions, noting that the programme delivered valuable insights and enhanced their operational capabilities. They particularly praised the practical nature of the training, which they believed would have a positive impact on their daily responsibilities

Assistant Controller Rose Bonat of the Transire Unit commended the Command for the initiative, describing it as “laudable and forward-thinking.” She said the training had exposed her to updated Standard Operating Procedures and best practices, which would significantly enhance her efficiency and confidence on the job.

AC Bonat added, “This training has broadened my understanding and equipped me with tools that are directly applicable to my role. I commend the leadership of the Command for investing in the professional growth of officers.”
