Faith, sacrifice take centre stage as Catholic Women celebrate mothering Sunday

Members of the Catholic Women Organisation(CWO) at St. Joseph Catholic Church Adeleye, Ogun State have joined Catholics worldwide to celebrate Mothering Sunday, using the occasion to honour the sacrifices of mothers and encourage steadfastness in faith.

The celebration, which also involved outstations such as Church of Presentation Fence and St. Valentine Ejigun, highlighted the vital role of women in nurturing families, promoting peace, and upholding Christian values.

Speaking during the event, CWO President, Felicia Nwaokolo-Oba, described Mothering Sunday as a special moment to recognise the commitment and devotion of mothers in both the home and the Church.

She noted that women draw inspiration from Virgin Mary, whom she described as a model of faith, hope, and love. According to her, the annual celebration fosters unity among women and deepens appreciation for the gift of motherhood.

Nwaokolo-Oba urged mothers to remain steadfast despite life’s challenges, emphasising prayer, hope, and devotion as essential tools for overcoming difficulties. She also encouraged them to raise their children with strong Christian and Catholic values.

Also speaking, Agatha Elue called on mothers to value and celebrate themselves, noting that the demands of family life often leave little room for personal care.

She said Mothering Sunday provides an opportunity for rest, reflection, and appreciation, urging women to take time off their routine responsibilities and enjoy the significance of the day.

In her remarks, Elizabeth Oyana encouraged women to emulate the virtues of the Virgin Mary, particularly humility and unwavering faith. She described the opportunity to witness another Mothering Sunday as a blessing deserving gratitude to God.

Oyana further urged mothers to remain committed to good deeds and serve as role models to younger generations, noting that exemplary living would inspire others to embrace godly values.

Similarly, CWO Secretary, Oluchi Eka-Iloma, emphasised the importance of discipline, love, and good conduct in raising children, urging mothers to lead by example both in their families and in society.

Also lending her voice, CWO patroness, Christy Ukachi, offered prayers for mothers, expressing hope for their longevity and continued strength to care for their families.

The celebration featured a variety of activities, including a colourful march past, dancing competitions, games, and other social events. Members of the Catholic Men Organisation were also present to support and celebrate with the women, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The event underscored the enduring importance of motherhood, faith, and unity within the Catholic community, while reinforcing the role of women as pillars of both family and society.
