MWUN mourns Ex-Vice President General Alfred Etete, demands justice over brutal killing

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has strongly condemned the killing of its former Vice President-General, Comrade (Chief) Alfred Etete, describing the act as barbaric and unacceptable.

In a release signed by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna head of Media MWUN, the President-General of the Union, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, and  the Union expressed deep shock and sorrow over the gruesome murder of the late labour leader, who was reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen at his residence in Agwut-Obolo, Rivers State.

Until his untimely death, Chief Etete was a respected community leader and a retired Vice President-General of MWUN. He previously served under the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Branch of the Union and was widely acknowledged for his meritorious and conscientious service before his retirement.

According to Comrade Bunu, the late Etete was a committed trade unionist who dedicated his active years to the growth and stability of the union. Even in retirement, he remained a symbol of integrity and continued to serve his community with the wealth of experience he garnered over the years.

The MWUN leadership described the killing as a painful and shocking loss, noting that Chief Etete was not only a senior comrade but also a trusted friend and mentor to many within the Union. He was hailed as a gentleman, a role model, and a labour activist whose legacy of dedication and courage will not be forgotten.

Comrade Bunu further emphasized that no individual has the right to take another person’s life under any circumstance, urging security agencies particularly the police—to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible for the heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice.

The Union expressed confidence that the perpetrators would be identified and prosecuted, stressing that justice must prevail for the sake of posterity and societal order.

MWUN also extended its heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Chief Alfred Etete, praying that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his loved ones the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
