The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised questions over the immigration status of three Chinese nationals arrested in Ogere-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, after they were allegedly found residing in the country with expired visitor’s stamps.
The suspects were arrested on Wednesday during a joint enforcement operation involving operatives of the EFCC and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The operation reportedly took place opposite a massive illegal refinery in the community, where the Chinese nationals were allegedly discovered staying despite the expiration of their visitor’s immigration endorsements.
Their arrest has brought renewed attention to questions surrounding the circumstances of their entry into Nigeria, the purpose of their visit and the legality of their continued residence in the country.
Although details of their identities and the specific circumstances surrounding their arrival were not immediately disclosed, their alleged immigration violations are expected to form part of the investigations by the relevant authorities.
The EFCC’s involvement in the operation also points to a broader investigation into activities surrounding the suspected illegal refinery and possible financial or economic crimes connected to its operations.
The discovery of the foreigners in the vicinity of the facility raises further questions about their possible involvement, although no direct link between the suspects and the refinery’s operations has been established.
The joint operation underscores the need for stronger inter-agency collaboration in tackling illegal petroleum activities, economic crimes and other forms of criminality that exploit weaknesses in regulatory and border-control systems.
The authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the Chinese nationals’ presence in the area, including whether they had the necessary authorisation to remain in Nigeria after the expiration of their visitor’s stamps.
Further details of the investigation and possible legal action against the suspects are expected as the relevant agencies continue their inquiries.
