Mothering Sunday: Mothers enjoined to complement husbands in building Christian homes devoid of rivalry – Mrs Ogunjobi

Mothers have been reminded that they are uniquely made and placed in their families to join hands with their husbands to build a Christian home devoid of rat race struggle for supremacy with their husbands.

Emphasising that the devil fights daily to put off the light of God in every Christian home. That they are not in a race to outshine each other rather in the mission of building a prayerful godly home, in view of which mothers are to shun any insidious cooperation with the devil and all his end-time tricks.

The wife of the vicar, Holy Trinity Anglican Church Ikotun, Lagos, Mrs Busola Ogunjobi, gave the charge while delivering her 2025 mothering Sunday sermon at the church.

She described mothers as helpmates and home keepers who are ever ready to submit to their husbands, implored them to be beacons of light not destroyers of light.

Further on, she charged mothers to be mindful of the fact that they are female parents who gave birth to children with the express task to nurture them in faith, that it takes a godly mother to raise a godly child and home.

The vicar’s wife said it’s unfortunate that not all biological mothers are mothers in the real sense of it, quiped that ‘not all that have a piano is a musician.’

Speaking on the topic, “the role of the husband and the wife in home building” Mrs Ogunjobi, emphasised the need for the husband and the wife to support each other and speak with one voice when it comes to decisions that affect their children and other vital family interests.

Anchoring her message on Proverbs 31 and Ephesians 6:1-4, she admonished children to uphold that sacred injunction of honouring their parents, fathers she reminded of that priestley and protective role God placed on them in the family, while describing mothers as reflection of the family, pride of the home and virtuous image of God.

She further admonished mothers on imbibing the personality of Lois and Eunice which rubbed off on Timothy’s behavior as recorded in 2 Timothy 1:5 – their faith and legacy of practical Christianity which Timothy sustained.

Children she emphasised learn by emulation as, “Mothers must be intentional in their mode and pattern of nurturing their family not ‘anything goes’ as no mother gives what she does not have, what you have is what you as well believe in.

“We will give account of how we have managed our children, whether as gatherers or scatterers, no room for middle ground. How we have supported and encouraged our husbands, all we shall account for at the last day.

“The ‘Gen zee’ mothers(those that have grown up with the internet, smartphones and social media as integral part of them) should not be in a haste to take decision for God in the affairs of their families, such error has taken toll on them as primary role of rearing their children is left in the hand of caregivers.

“At three years, they have totally abandoned their children, denying them that mother and child early bonding. In most cases abandoning them in boarding schools at a very tender age,” she said.

She reminded mothers on the kind of dresses they put on as the children see them as a role model while the society see them as ‘image of God’.

She cautioned mothers to run from such vices as breakdown of communication between husbands and wives, lack of self control, secrecy in home finances, absence of family alter and family prayers, third party influence, poor time management, etc, all she expressed as major obstacles of the light of God into godly families.

Fervent prayers were said for children, families yet to have their babies; for widows and widowers, prayer for peace in Nigeria and leaders. For God’s protection and to put back the country on its former glory of God.
