Lockdown: FG has power to shut borders as states await Buhari

The inter-state lockdown resolution  of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) awaits its implementation by the federal government as it is the only arm that has the constitutional power to shut inter-state borders.

NGF, the umbrella  body of governors of the 36 states of the federation made resolution for the lockdown on Friday after their meeting conducted via teleconference.

Their decision was however passed on to the President through  the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation  who is also the Chairman, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha. to enable the government put machinery in motion to achieve compliance.

“The governors’ resolution is to curtail the spread of Coronavirus.The federal government has the power to shut inter-state borders, hence the request to Mr. President,” he said.

“The two weeks’ lockdown will be announced by Mr. President. It’s a done deal. However, he will list exemptions and give Nigerians other important information.”

According to the letter signed by  Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State who is Chairman, NGF the forum wants free but restricted movement within states.

The governor’s asked for inter-state lockdown, free movement of essential supplies such as food, beverages, medical and pharmaceutical, petroleum supplies and agricultural products.

They also requested  for internal free movement but restrictions on large gatherings and assemblies, overnight curfews, flights ban and compulsory use of face masks/coverings in public.
