International Women Day 2026: WIMA Nigeria applauds women’s role in maritime, global dev

The President of Women in Maritime Africa Nigeria Chapter, Nwaeze Theodora, has joined the global community in celebrating women worldwide, commending their resilience, courage, and immense contributions to societal development as part of activities marking International Women’s Day.

Speaking with journalists, the WIMA Nigeria President described the annual celebration as an important moment to recognise the role women play in driving global progress, peace, and sustainable development across different sectors.

She noted that women have consistently demonstrated determination and strength in shaping a better future for society despite numerous challenges.

According to her, the resilience and commitment of women have continued to sustain communities, institutions, and economies around the world.

“Today marks another important moment to celebrate women worldwide. I commend the resilience, courage, and unwavering determination of women who continue to stand firm in the pursuit of progress and equality. Women have shown remarkable strength and commitment in ensuring that our world continues to evolve and not collapse under the weight of challenges,” she said.

Nwaeze particularly applauded women in the maritime industry for their growing influence and professionalism within the expanding global blue economy.

She said women in maritime have continued to demonstrate excellence, innovation, and dedication in an industry historically dominated by men, while contributing significantly to the growth and sustainability of the sector.

“To all women in maritime and women across the world, I celebrate your doggedness and resilient spirit. Your commitment to excellence, innovation, and service has made significant contributions to the growth of industries and societies alike,” she added.

The WIMA Nigeria president further described women as natural peace builders and solution providers whose contributions help maintain social stability and balance.

In the official release jointly signed by Mrs. Nwaeze, and Lola Adesokan, Public Relations Officer(PRO) of the organisation further emphasized women’s fearless advocacy for justice and equality, playing vital roles in strengthening families, institutions, and nations.

“Women are peacemakers and providers of solutions. They are fearless fighters for freedom and rights, showing zero tolerance for intimidation. Their presence in our world creates balance and stability, enabling families, institutions, and nations to thrive,” she stated.

Mrs. Nwaeze also used the occasion to reaffirm her administration’s commitment to advancing the goals of WIMA Nigeria through strategic initiatives focused on empowerment and inclusion within the maritime sector.

She noted that the organisation remains committed to delivering on its key priorities of empowerment, innovation, collaboration, and enhancing national visibility for women in maritime.

She assured stakeholders that WIMA Nigeria will continue to champion programmes that strengthen the capacity of women, promote inclusive participation in the maritime industry, and expand opportunities for Nigerian women on both national and international platforms.

The WIMA Nigeria president encouraged women to remain confident, united, and forward-looking as they continue to shape the future of the maritime industry and contribute meaningfully to global development.
