Grand Chief Imam of Oyo demands united front against terror after school attack

The Grand Chief Imam of Oyo Land,Sheikh Al-Imam Barrister Bilal Husayn Akinola Akeugberu, has condemned the killings linked to the recent abduction incident at Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the acts as barbaric and a threat to societal peace.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Islamic cleric expressed grief over the reported deaths of teachers and other victims connected to the incident, saying the attack reflects the growing insecurity confronting communities across the country.

The cleric described the killings as “barbaric, satanic and inhuman,” warning that the persistent loss of innocent lives should prompt urgent and coordinated action from governments, traditional institutions, religious leaders and community stakeholders.

According to him, the fight against insecurity should not be left to government alone, urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, transport unions, market associations, youth groups, vigilantes and community leaders to work together in exposing criminal elements and suspected informants aiding kidnappers.

“Silence, indifference and concealment of criminal activities only embolden enemies of peace and humanity,” the statement noted.

The sheikh Akeugberu also urged religious leaders across faiths to intensify prayers for peace and security while promoting vigilance, moral discipline and unity among citizens.

He commended security agencies for ongoing rescue efforts and urged them to sustain operations until all remaining captives are safely reunited with their families.

The cleric sympathised with bereaved families, residents of Ahoro-Esinle, the management of the affected school, security operatives involved in rescue operations, and the Oyo State Government over the incident.

He further appealed to citizens to cooperate with lawful authorities, remain alert, and avoid spreading divisive narratives capable of escalating tensions.

The Grand Chief Imam prayed for comfort for affected families, healing for injured security personnel, and the safe return of those still reportedly in captivity.

He also called for lasting peace and stability across Oyo state and the country at large.
