Customs seeks calm after Osogbo fatal operation, orders investigation

The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced an investigation into an incident that occurred along the Osogbo axis of Osun State, following the circulation of a video on social media and a related statement by the Osun State Police Command.

In a statement issued March 15, 2026, the Command expressed concern over the development and assured the public that efforts are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the Command, preliminary reports indicate that officers attached to its patrol team were carrying out routine enforcement operations in the Osogbo area when the incident occurred. The patrol team was reportedly attempting to intercept suspected smuggled foreign-used vehicles, commonly referred to as “Tokunbo,” in line with the Service’s statutory mandate to suppress smuggling and enforce trade regulations.

Abdulmalik Akintola, Public Relations Officer(PRO) of the command, it however expressed deep regret over the loss of life recorded during the incident and extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.

It stressed that the Nigeria Customs Service places a high value on the sanctity of human life and remains committed to conducting its enforcement activities with professionalism and responsibility.

As part of the ongoing review, the Command said it has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances captured in the circulating video.

The process includes examining the operational mandates of the officers identified in the incident—Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel; to determine whether their actions and the tactical approach adopted complied with the Service’s established Rules of Engagement.

While reaffirming its commitment to discipline and the rule of law, the Command noted that it maintains a strong working relationship with the Nigeria Police Force and called for an objective and coordinated investigation that would consider all forensic evidence, including the origin of the ammunition discharged during the incident.

The Oyo/Osun Area Command also urged members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to run its course. It cautioned against the spread of unverified information capable of creating unnecessary tension between security agencies or within the community.

According to the Command, the outcome of the investigation will guide further actions in line with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
