Beyond maritime regulation: Nigerian Shippers’ Council invests in healthcare infrastructure in Lagos

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has extended its impact beyond the maritime sector with a strategic investment in healthcare infrastructure in Lagos, reinforcing its commitment to community development within its operational environment.

In a move that underscores its corporate social responsibility agenda, the Council donated a specialized, adjustable dental chair to the dental unit of General Hospital Apapa. The intervention is aimed at strengthening oral healthcare delivery and improving access to quality medical services for residents of Apapa and surrounding communities.

The equipment was presented by a delegation from the Council led by the Director of the Special Duties Department on behalf of the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Akutah Pius, MON. The Council explained that the initiative reflects its recognition that sustainable economic growth must be supported by strong social infrastructure, particularly in host communities that support critical maritime and logistics operations.

Speaking during the presentation, the Council’s representative noted that while the NSC’s statutory mandate revolves around regulating and promoting efficiency in Nigeria’s port and shipping industry, the institution remains equally committed to enhancing the welfare of the people living and working within its areas of influence.

He emphasized that access to quality healthcare is a key pillar of sustainable development, adding that strengthening medical infrastructure contributes to healthier communities and improved productivity.

The newly donated dental chair is equipped with modern adjustable features designed to enhance patient comfort and enable dental practitioners to carry out procedures more efficiently. Hospital officials said the equipment will help reduce procedural strain on healthcare workers, expand treatment capacity, and shorten waiting times for patients seeking dental care.

Receiving the donation, the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of General Hospital Apapa, Dr. Lateefat Omolara Agbaje, described the gesture as timely and impactful. She expressed appreciation to the Council, noting that the intervention would significantly improve the hospital’s ability to deliver quality oral healthcare services to the growing population in Apapa and neighbouring areas.

According to her, partnerships between public institutions and socially responsible organizations remain vital in bridging infrastructure gaps in the health sector.

The donation highlights the Nigerian Shippers’ Council’s broader philosophy that effective regulation and economic development must go hand in hand with meaningful social investment.
