4 years after piracy decline, NIMASA, NAF strengthen aerial maritime security

Four years after Nigeria recorded a dramatic decline in piracy incidents within its territorial waters, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have renewed their commitment to intensified aerial surveillance as a safeguard against emerging maritime threats.

This resolve was reinforced during a high-level meeting in Abuja between NIMASA’s Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.

NIMASA and NAF at the meeting agreed that sustaining Nigeria’s zero-piracy status requires continuous technological upgrades, coordinated intelligence, and rapid-response capability.

Mobereola however described Nigeria’s four-year record of zero piracy attacks in its territorial waters as a major milestone that has reshaped the country’s global maritime reputation. He attributed the success to sustained inter-agency collaboration and the integrated security framework provided by the Deep Blue Project.

NIMASA boss said aerial surveillance has been central to detecting suspicious movements, supporting interdictions, and deterring criminal networks operating along the Gulf of Guinea corridor.

Safer waters he said have encouraged trade growth and improved investor confidence. “The professionalism and coordinated efforts of our Armed Forces and security agencies have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s standing in the global maritime community,” he said.

On UAV at the Core of Maritime Monitoring, both agencies identified Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as critical tools in the next phase of maritime security operations. Unlike conventional patrol methods, UAVs provide continuous, real-time coverage across Nigeria’s vast coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone.

Mobereola emphasized that sustained drone-driven surveillance will enhance maritime domain awareness, protect offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and secure shipping lanes vital to Nigeria’s economy.

With maritime trade accounting for a substantial portion of national revenue, he stressed that security lapses could reverse the gains made over the past four years.

Responding, Air Marshal Aneke reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to deepened operational synergy. He outlined the Air Force’s long-range surveillance aircraft, maritime patrol platforms, UAV fleets, and rapid-response air assets designed to provide actionable intelligence in real time.

He described air power as a decisive force multiplier in maritime security, capable of bridging surveillance gaps, accelerating response times, and strengthening joint operations with naval and maritime authorities.

“Enhanced air–maritime integration will further secure sea lines of communication, safeguard offshore installations, and reinforce the President’s vision of a vibrant and secure blue economy,” the Air Chief stated.

Security and Economic Stability

Industry observers note that maritime security directly influences shipping insurance costs, foreign direct investment, and port efficiency. Nigeria’s improved security profile has reduced risk perceptions in international shipping circles, positioning the country as a safer maritime destination in West Africa.

However, experts warn that piracy networks can quickly regroup if surveillance weakens — a concern that underscores the importance of sustained collaboration between maritime regulators and defense institutions.

By strengthening aerial maritime security four years after piracy declined, NIMASA and the Nigerian Air Force are signaling that vigilance, innovation, and inter-agency coordination remain central to protecting Nigeria’s waters and unlocking the full potential of its blue economy.
