Promise fulfilled: Apapa-Iganmu deploys Swamp Buggy to tackle flooding, restore canals

Residents of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have welcomed the commencement of a large-scale canal clearance exercise following the deployment of a heavy-duty swamp buggy to desilt and restore blocked drainage channels across the community.

The exercise, which began on Tuesday, forms part of the council’s flood mitigation strategy aimed at improving water flow, protecting lives and property, and creating a cleaner and healthier environment, particularly as the rainy season intensifies.

According to the council, the specialised swamp buggy was procured through the efforts of the Executive Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu, in fulfilment of his commitment to tackle persistent flooding and environmental challenges affecting residents.

The council described the intervention as a major step towards reducing the impact of heavy rainfall by removing silt, weeds, refuse and other obstructions that have hindered the free flow of stormwater through canals.

Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Raymond Tedunjaiye, said the project demonstrates the administration’s resolve to translate campaign promises into concrete actions that directly improve the welfare of residents.

He urged residents to continue supporting the administration and to complement the government’s efforts by refraining from dumping refuse into drainage channels, warning that indiscriminate waste disposal remains one of the leading causes of blocked canals and urban flooding.

While acknowledging that flooding has become a global environmental challenge, the council noted that unusually heavy rainfall experienced in recent weeks across Nigeria has further underscored the need for proactive drainage maintenance and environmental management.

The latest intervention comes amid growing public attention on flood control across Lagos, where state and local governments have intensified desilting operations following forecasts of above-normal rainfall and increased flood risks in vulnerable communities.

Environmental experts have consistently stressed that regular desilting of canals, removal of aquatic weeds and proper waste management are among the most effective measures for preventing urban flooding, especially in low-lying coastal areas such as Apapa and its adjoining communities.

Residents expressed optimism that the exercise would ease perennial flooding, improve sanitation and reduce disruptions to businesses and daily activities if sustained throughout the rainy season.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining critical drainage infrastructure and implementing additional environmental initiatives designed to build a safer, cleaner and more resilient Apapa-Iganmu community.
