Ports Police, AMJON strengthen collaboration to enhance maritime security, transparency

The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency and security in Nigeria’s maritime sector following a courtesy visit to the Ports Authority Police Western Command in Apapa, Lagos.

The delegation, led by AMJON President, Vera Osokpo, commended the Command for its sustained efforts in maintaining security, safety, and operational efficiency across the nation’s western ports.

The association commended the CP for the improved security architecture within port facilities which has significantly enhanced ease of doing business and boosted stakeholder confidence in Nigeria’s maritime industry.

Osokpo further expressed confidence in the leadership of the commissioner, highlighting her attentiveness and inclusive approach to issues as key qualities that could drive further progress within the Command and the broader marine and blue economy sector.

Receiving the delegation, the Commissioner of Police, Oluwatoyin Iyabode Agbaminoja, flanked by her management team appreciated the visit and underscored the critical role of the media in shaping public perception and promoting accountability within the maritime domain.

She emphasized the Command’s readiness to sustain a strong partnership with maritime journalists, particularly in the areas of information sharing, public awareness, and accurate reportage. According to her, effective communication between security agencies and the media is essential for addressing operational challenges and projecting security achievements within the port environment.

The Commissioner further reiterated the Command’s commitment to collaborating with AMJON to combat misinformation, promote balanced reporting, and highlight both successes and challenges within Nigeria’s maritime security framework.

She assured stakeholders and the general public of the Command’s unwavering resolve to maintain a safe and conducive environment for maritime operations, in line with national economic priorities.

Providing insight into the Commissioner’s professional profile, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Isaac Hundeyin, disclosed that CP Agbaminoja brings over three decades of policing experience to her current role.

Agbaminoja holds a master’s degree in Public and International Relations from the University of Lagos and has earned numerous professional certifications and accolades.

Her career spans key assignments especially as a family member of the public relations and by extension the media having served at the Force Public Relations Department Abuja as a Staff Officer.

Agbaminoja has performed operational roles in the Lagos State Police Command, including Divisional Crime Officer in Ikeja and Area Crime Officer in Ogudu. She also made history as the first female Area Commander of Area ‘M’ Idimu and was once the Officer-in-Charge, Taskforce and Enforcement, National Agency for and Drugs Administration and Control(NAFDAC).

In addition, she has broken new ground in several leadership positions, including Head, Diplomatic Unit, Special Fraud Unit (SFU) Ikoyi, first female Deputy Commissioner of Police(DCP) at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters Annexe Lagos; first female DCP at Zonal CID Zone 2; first female DCP, State CID in Oyo State; and the first female DCP Administration at the Airport Police Command.

Her experience within maritime policing includes roles such as Divisional Police Officer(DPO), Roro Port Division, Tin Can Island Command, Western Ports Command Traffic Officer.

Promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in February 2025, she was deployed to the Special Inquiry Bureau at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Alagbon, Lagos, before assuming office as the 33rd Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command.

ASP Hundeyin expressed that the visit has highlighted the growing importance of synergy between the media and security agencies in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain, with both AMJON and the Ports Police Command pledging sustained engagement to enhance security, transparency, and sector performance.
