Maritime journalists hail Nigeria’s historic IMO Council win

The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has congratulated Nigeria on its successful election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, Category C, after 14 years of unsuccessful attempts.

AMJON also commended President Bola Tinubu, Minister Adegboyega Oyetola,Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, NIMASA, and other agencies for their contributions to Nigeria’s IMO Council victory, calling it a historic achievement that reaffirms the country’s global maritime relevance.

In a statement signed by Acting President Vera Osokpo and Public Relations Officer(PRO) Uzor Odigbo, AMJON credited the success to Minister Oyetola’s focused leadership and the Ministry’s strategic diplomatic efforts with key maritime institutions.

The Association attributed the victory to the Minister’s sustained engagement with IMO member states, clear projection of Nigeria’s maritime reform agenda, and coordinated campaign efforts, which secured the highly competitive seat.

AMJON also commended NIMASA for providing the strong technical and institutional support that strengthened Nigeria’s bid, adding that the agency’s progress in maritime safety administration, regulatory compliance, capacity building and improved security architecture in the Gulf of Guinea significantly enhanced Nigeria’s international standing.

AMJON stressed that Nigeria’s election into the IMO Council is a recognition of the country’s improved maritime security profile and growing adherence to international maritime standards.

It said Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council positions the country to contribute meaningfully to global shipping and maritime policy discussions, while advancing the interests of Africa and developing maritime nations within this two years period spanning from 2026 to 2027.

The Association urged the Ministry and NIMASA to capitalize on the Council membership to drive maritime reforms, enhance regional cooperation, and attract investments into the sector.

AMJON reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote Nigeria’s maritime industry growth and sustainability.
