Kano Assembly considers castration of rapist says 15year imprisonment not enough

The Kano state House of Assembly has begun a process of amending the State’s law to provide for castration as punishment for rape in the state rather than the present 15 years jail term.

This followed a motion seeking for the review of the law presented on Wednesday at the floor of the house by the member representing Rano state constituency, Nuraddeen Alhassan.

The lawmaker insisted that the present 14 years jail punishment was not enough, therefore called for the review of the law to further effect more stringent punishment for rapists in the state.

He said precarious state of the matter has called for urgent need to further amend the State’s Penal Code amendment (No.12), Law of 2014 to provide for castration as punishment for rapists in the state.

He stated that it has become necessary for the House to find out how rape cases were being handled by the courts in the state as that would go along way to direct their input.

“Therefore, I am calling on the House to recall the law and amend it, to provide castration punishment for rapists.

“I believe this is the only measure to be taken to end the rampant cases of rape in our society, as it is so worrisome.

“I also want to appeal to the House to look into the security issues, so as to strengthen their efforts in tackling the rape cases in the state,” he appealed.

Alhassan further argued that if parents can desist from sending their children and words for hawking, it will go a long way to reduce the increasing cases of this dastardly act.

Most children he said have been raped in the course of hawking around homes and construction sites where they are lured most times into uncompleted buildings.

After deliberations by the lawmakers on the matter, the house unanimously adopted the motion and ordered for the recall of the present law that stipulates 15 years jail term for reconsideration.
