Correctional Service applauds Adeleke over inmate welfare, security reforms

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Osun State Command, has commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for his sustained interventions aimed at improving inmate welfare, healthcare delivery, and security infrastructure across custodial centres in the state.

The commendation was conveyed in an official letter addressed to the governor and signed by the Controller of Corrections, Osun State Command, who described the administration’s reforms as humane, impactful, and supportive of effective correctional management.

According to the Service, one of the most notable interventions is the inclusion of inmates in the Osun State Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS), a move that has significantly expanded access to quality healthcare services within custodial facilities.

“We are particularly grateful for your kind assistance in facilitating the free enrollment of inmates into the Osun State Health Insurance Scheme.

“This laudable intervention has ensured that inmates now have access to high-quality healthcare services, thereby promoting dignity, improved well-being, and effective correctional health management,” the letter stated.

Osun Security Infrastructure Strengthened

Beyond healthcare, the Correctional Service acknowledged the governor’s efforts in enhancing security across custodial centres in the state.

Key interventions highlighted include the elevation of the perimeter fence at the Ilesha Custodial Centre, installation of solar-powered streetlights at the Ilesha and Ile-Ife facilities, and the provision of barbed wire to reinforce security.

The Service noted that these measures have significantly improved visibility, safety, and operational efficiency, while strengthening the protection of lives and property within and around the facilities.

The Controller of Corrections also commended Governor Adeleke’s commitment to rehabilitation through education, particularly his promise to establish Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres in custodial facilities.

According to the Service, the initiative will enhance digital literacy, support educational advancement, and improve the reintegration prospects of inmates upon release.

“These interventions collectively demonstrate your unwavering commitment to humane correctional administration, security enhancement, and the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates,” the letter added.

Adeleke Reaffirms Inclusive Governance

Governor Adeleke had earlier demonstrated his administration’s commitment to inmate welfare during the official rollout of health insurance coverage for 1,200 inmates at the Ilesa Medium Security Custodial Centre.

At the event, the governor emphasised that inmates, like all citizens, deserve access to quality healthcare, describing the initiative as part of a broader agenda of inclusive governance and people-centred service delivery.

He noted that the programme builds on other social interventions by his administration, including free health insurance coverage for over 26,000 pensioners, 10,000 persons with disabilities, and a large-scale eye care initiative that has benefited hundreds of thousands of students.

Growing Recognition for Administration

The commendation by the Nigerian Correctional Service adds to growing recognition of the Adeleke administration’s efforts to extend social protection, improve public institutions, and deliver inclusive governance across Osun State.
