Democracy Day: Idimogu urges Nigerians to embrace unity, support Tinubu’s reforms

Former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. (Dr.) Jude Chukwuemeka Omobowale Idimogu, has congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on the occasion of Democracy Day, commending their resilience and unwavering commitment to sustaining democratic governance in the country.

Idimogu, who represented Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly for two consecutive terms, said the June 12 celebration provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey, honour the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes, and recommit themselves to the ideals of unity, peace and national development.

In a goodwill message issued on Thursday, the former lawmaker praised Nigerians for their steadfastness despite the economic and social challenges confronting the country, noting that the survival and growth of democracy over the past 27 years have been made possible by the collective sacrifices of citizens and democratic institutions.

“Democracy remains the most inclusive system of government because it gives citizens a voice in determining their future. As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must acknowledge the courage of those who fought for democratic rule and the resilience of Nigerians who have continued to uphold democratic values over the years,” he said.

The former lawmaker urged Nigerians to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in its efforts to address the nation’s economic challenges and deliver sustainable development across sectors.

According to him, meaningful progress can only be achieved when citizens and government work together towards common national goals.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is committed to keeping Nigeria united and strengthening the foundations of our democracy. Nation-building is a collective responsibility, and every Nigerian has a role to play in ensuring peace, stability and progress,” Idimogu stated.

The Igbo Deputy Apex Leader in Lagos further called on Nigerians to put aside ethnic, religious and political differences and embrace the country’s rich diversity as a tool for national growth and economic transformation.

He stressed that Nigeria’s heterogeneity should be viewed as a strength rather than a source of division, adding that unity remains critical to unlocking the country’s enormous potential.

“Our diversity is one of our greatest assets. Nigerians must tap into the power of our differences and transform them into opportunities for growth, innovation and development. It is only through unity, mutual respect and cooperation that our economy can truly blossom and our nation can attain its full potential,” he said.

Idimogu also paid tribute to the heroes and martyrs of the June 12 struggle whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.

He urged citizens to honour their memories by promoting peaceful coexistence, defending democratic institutions and contributing positively to the country’s development.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember those who paid the ultimate price for democracy. The best way to honour them is to preserve the unity of our nation, strengthen democratic governance and work collectively for a better future for generations yet unborn,” he added.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in commemoration of the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history and in honour of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the presumed winner of the election.
