Kwankwaso hosts Igbo elders, secures backing for proposed Obi-Kwankwaso ticket

The emerging political alliance between former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, received a major boost on Wednesday as a delegation of Igbo elders pledged widespread support for the partnership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The delegation, drawn from the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, visited Kwankwaso at his Abuja residence, where members expressed confidence in the growing collaboration between the two political figures under the platform of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Leading the delegation were S. N. Okeke, Chairman of the Ohanaeze Council of Elders for the 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and former Enugu State governor, Okwesilieze Nwodo.

The elders described the Obi-Kwankwaso relationship as a positive development capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape and fostering greater national unity. They argued that the partnership presents an opportunity to build a broad-based political movement that transcends regional and ethnic divides.

According to the delegation, the South-East and other parts of Southern Nigeria are prepared to support the alliance, which they believe offers a credible alternative for addressing the country’s economic, security and governance challenges.

The group also highlighted the historical political ties between Northern and South-Eastern Nigeria, noting that stronger cooperation between the two regions could contribute significantly to national stability and development.

Responding, Kwankwaso thanked the delegation for the visit and described the engagement as an opportunity to discuss issues affecting the nation and the future direction of the country’s politics.

He expressed satisfaction with his working relationship with Obi, describing it as cordial, productive and aligned with the broader objectives of the NDC.

The former governor reaffirmed his commitment to the party and the “OK Movement,” maintaining that the coalition remains focused on building a formidable political platform capable of winning future elections and providing effective leadership for Nigerians.

Kwankwaso further stressed the need for a broad-based national coalition that would unite citizens across regional, religious and ethnic lines, insisting that Nigeria’s challenges require collective action and inclusive leadership.

The endorsement by the Igbo elders comes amid growing political realignments and coalition talks among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, as various groups seek to consolidate support and position themselves for the next presidential contest.

Political observers believe that any successful alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 race, given the strong support bases both politicians command across different regions of the country.
