NIWA responds to Lagos State call to halt sand-filling approvals on waterways

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has responded to the Lagos State Government’s call to halt sand-filling approvals on waterways, clarifying that it does not issue sand-filling licenses without thorough evaluation and inter-agency consultations.

NIWA Managing Director, Dr. Bola Oyebamiji, who made the clarification said the agency grants provisional permits based on professional assessments and documentation, including letters of allocation from relevant authorities.

The Lagos State Government, led by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, had expressed concerns over the detrimental effects of sand-filling activities on the environment and the risks posed to the ferry transportation network. Hamzat emphasized the need for safety and environmental sustainability, warning that unchecked sand-filling activities could compromise the future of inland water transport.

The dispute between Lagos State and NIWA highlights the need for clearer regulations and inter-governmental cooperation to balance commercial interests, environmental sustainability, and public safety. Industry stakeholders stress the importance of stronger coordination between NIWA and the Lagos State Government to ensure the long-term viability of Lagos’ water transportation system.

As Lagos expands its ferry services to ease road congestion, NIWA’s role in regulating and managing inland waterways becomes increasingly crucial.
