COVID-19: Infected pregnant nurse dies, baby alive

A pregnant nurse who recently got infected with the global pandemic, coronavirus has died few days after she had her baby through a caesarean, the baby survived and is hale.

The 28-year-old nurse Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong a staff of Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, London was said to have tested positive for the virus on 5 April. She had the caesarean soon after going into hospital on 7 April but died on Sunday 12 April.

Agyapong said to be a highly valued nurse had worked for five years at the hospital. A spokeswoman for the hospital only has to say that the nurse’s “child was doing very well.”

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mary’s family and friends at this sad time,” he said.

The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital has in it’s employ about 3,400 staff, its an acute hospital run by Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

It provides medical and surgical services for over 350,000 people in Bedfordshire, the north of Hertfordshire and parts of Buckinghamshire. The hospital is often abbreviated to the ‘L&D.

Agyapong’s death will no doubt add concern to health workers working to fight COVID-19 especially pregnant women.

However, the hospital said she had finished her last shift on 12 March, and had not been at work since then, adding that they had followed official guidance and she was not treating coronavirus patients.

It is not known if she was infected when she was still working or if the baby has contracted Covid-19. It is understood her husband is self-isolating.
