5 Nigerian drug syndicates arrested by South African police

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Secunda city have apprehended five Nigerian nationals for a range of offenses, including drug dealing, interfering with police duties, and breaching immigration laws.
The arrests was significant law enforcement operation that took place on July 18, 2024, in Evander followed extensive investigation and coordinated action by the two agencies.
The operation, a joint effort between the Secunda branch of the Hawks and the SAPS Secunda K9 Unit, aimed to dismantle a suspected drug distribution network in the area. The suspects, aged between 34 and 48, were detained after surveillance and intelligence gathering indicated their involvement in illegal drug activities.

During the operation, law enforcement officers seized a substantial quantity of drugs, which authorities believe were intended for distribution within the local community. While the specific types and amounts of drugs have not been disclosed pending further analysis, the seizure represents a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in the region.

The suspects are also facing charges related to obstructing law enforcement duties. This charge typically involves actions that hinder or interfere with the police’s ability to perform their responsibilities, such as resisting arrest or attempting to destroy or hide evidence.

In addition to drug-related charges, the suspects have been cited for violations of the Immigration Act. Preliminary reports suggest that some or all of the individuals may lack the necessary legal status to reside or engage in business activities in South Africa. Such violations could lead to additional legal consequences, including potential deportation.

Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, spokesperson for SAPS in Mpumalanga, commended the joint operation for its success. “This operation underscores our firm commitment to combatting drug-related crime and addressing any actions that obstruct our law enforcement efforts. We will continue to intensify our efforts to rid our communities of drug trafficking and other illegal activities,” Hlathi stated.

The arrested individuals are expected to face multiple charges in court. This operation highlights the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between different law enforcement bodies in addressing crime and ensuring public safety.

Local residents in Evander, who have long struggled with drug-related issues, view this operation as a crucial step in tackling the problem.
