270 Nigerians arrive from South Africa as FG intensifies reintegration efforts

The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to support returning migrants with the arrival of 270 Nigerians from South Africa under the ongoing voluntary return programme coordinated by relevant government agencies and stakeholders.

The returnees arrived this Thursday 11 June, 2026 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, where officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), alongside other government agencies, received them and commenced arrangements aimed at facilitating their reintegration into society.

According to NEMA, the returnees had earlier registered for the programme and successfully completed the required screening and documentation processes before their departure from South Africa.

The arrival marks another phase in the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe, orderly and dignified return of Nigerians who voluntarily choose to come back home from abroad.

In a statement issued by the Head of Operations, NEMA Lagos Operations Office, Mr. Mohammed Olatunde, the agency said adequate measures had been put in place to support the welfare of the returnees upon arrival.

He disclosed that transportation was provided to convey the returnees to their various destinations across the country, while ambulance services and other emergency medical support facilities were made available for those requiring immediate medical attention.

The government said the reintegration process goes beyond receiving the returnees at the airport, noting that efforts are being intensified to ensure they are successfully reabsorbed into society and provided with the necessary support to rebuild their lives.

Officials explained that the programme is part of broader humanitarian and migration management initiatives aimed at assisting Nigerians facing difficulties abroad while promoting safe migration and sustainable reintegration.

The arrival of the returnees also highlights the growing importance of coordinated partnerships among government institutions, humanitarian organisations and other stakeholders in addressing migration-related challenges and ensuring that citizens receive adequate support upon their return.

NEMA reaffirmed its commitment to its humanitarian mandate, stressing that it would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies and partners to provide assistance and protection for Nigerians returning home under the voluntary return programme.

The agency added that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening reintegration frameworks to enable returnees to settle back into their communities and contribute productively to national development.

With the latest batch safely back in the country, government officials say efforts will continue to ensure that returning Nigerians are treated with dignity and provided with opportunities to successfully restart their lives at home.
