Two days to go: NIMASA, AMJON to chart new course for innovative maritime training

By Admin

With just two days to the 2026 Maritime Summit and Awards of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and other industry stakeholders are set to chart a new course for innovation, skills development and human capital advancement in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The summit, scheduled for Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, sponsored by the Nigeria LNG Ship Management Limited (NSML) will bring together maritime regulators, policymakers, industry leaders, professionals and experts to examine how innovation and technology can reshape maritime training and prepare Nigeria’s workforce for emerging opportunities in the Blue Economy.

Themed “The Power of Innovation in a Future-Ready Maritime Training Agenda,” the summit is expected to place skills development at the centre of discussions on the future of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

Organised by AMJON in partnership with NIMASA, the event will provide a platform for stakeholders to assess the changing demands of the maritime industry and explore practical approaches to ensuring that training programmes remain relevant to technological developments and evolving global standards.

The discussions are also expected to address the human capital requirements of Nigeria’s expanding Blue Economy, particularly as the country seeks to derive greater economic value from its marine and coastal resources.

AMJON President, Vera Osokpo, said NIMASA’s partnership with the Association would contribute significantly to the quality of discussions at the summit, noting that innovation and capacity development are essential to achieving sustainable growth in the maritime sector.

Osokpo said Nigeria’s Blue Economy ambitions could not be fully realised without a skilled, competent and globally competitive maritime workforce capable of adapting to new technologies and emerging areas of economic activity.

She noted that the summit would enable stakeholders to share knowledge, identify gaps in existing training frameworks and consider innovative strategies for developing the expertise required to meet the future needs of the industry.

According to her, NIMASA’s regulatory responsibilities and interventions in maritime safety and security, shipping development, indigenous capacity and sustainable utilisation of marine resources make its participation particularly important to the summit’s objectives.

She added that the partnership also underscores the importance of collaboration among regulators, industry operators, training institutions and other stakeholders in building a maritime workforce capable of supporting Nigeria’s economic aspirations.

As preparations for the summit enter the final stage, AMJON said expectations are high that the gathering will produce fresh perspectives and practical recommendations for strengthening maritime training, promoting innovation and unlocking greater opportunities within Nigeria’s Blue Economy.

The event will also feature an awards segment recognising individuals and organisations that have made notable contributions to the development of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
