Shippers’ Council moves to stabilise maritime sector with immediate tariff freeze

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has ordered an immediate suspension of newly approved shipping tariff increases in a move aimed at restoring stability and confidence across Nigeria’s maritime sector.

In a directive issued on Friday, the Council instructed all shipping lines and their respective agents to halt implementation of the revised rates and revert to the tariff structure that was in place before the increase.

The port economic regulator said the decision followed extensive engagements with industry stakeholders and growing concerns over the timing, framework and likely effects of the new tariffs on port users and the wider logistics value chain.

According to the Council, freezing the tariff regime has become necessary to safeguard fair competition, ensure pricing transparency and prevent disruptions that could undermine sectoral efficiency.

It stressed that compliance with the directive is mandatory, warning that any operator that fails to revert to the previous rates would be in breach of regulatory provisions and subject to sanctions under applicable laws.

The NSC added that the suspension would remain effective pending the conclusion of comprehensive consultations and a thorough regulatory review process.

It assured stakeholders that a final position would be announced after the review, reaffirming its commitment to balanced economic regulation and industry-wide consensus.

The Council reiterated its dedication to protecting cargo interests, strengthening oversight of the shipping industry and fostering an efficient, transparent and equitable maritime transport system.

All operators, it said, are expected to comply strictly and without delay.
