Shippers’ Council intervenes in SIFAX-AGL dispute, resolves vessel berthing issues

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has intervened in an operational dispute involving SIFAX Group and AGL Logistics, successfully resolving issues surrounding the berthing of a vessel operated by AGL Logistics.

The intervention, led by the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Dr. Akutah Pius, was aimed at preventing operational disruptions and ensuring seamless port activities within the maritime sector.

Industry sources said the disagreement between both parties had raised concerns over cargo handling and vessel operations, prompting the Council to step in under its regulatory and dispute-resolution mandate.

The Council said its swift intervention demonstrated its commitment to maintaining industrial harmony, promoting efficient port operations, and supporting trade facilitation across Nigerian ports.

During the engagement, the Shippers’ Council also stressed the importance of optimal utilisation of terminal facilities and sustained cooperation among stakeholders in order to protect Nigeria’s maritime reputation and improve operational efficiency.

According to the Council, the discussions ended with a mutual resolution between both parties on cargo evacuation procedures and improved operational coordination going forward.

The resolution is expected to ease operational bottlenecks and prevent possible disruptions that could have affected cargo movement and vessel turnaround time at the port.

Management of both SIFAX Group and AGL Logistics reportedly commended the Council for its timely intervention and praised the leadership of the NSC for what they described as effective regulatory oversight within the maritime industry.

Stakeholders in the sector have repeatedly emphasised the importance of prompt regulatory mediation in resolving disputes among terminal operators, shipping companies, and logistics service providers in order to sustain efficiency at Nigerian ports.

The latest intervention by the Council comes amid ongoing efforts by the federal government and maritime agencies to improve port efficiency, reduce delays, strengthen cargo evacuation systems, and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness within the regional maritime and logistics sector.
