Revenue, security in focus as Apapa Customs strengthens collaboration with navy

The Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has reinforced its operational partnership with the Nigerian Navy, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance maritime security and trade facilitation.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, paid a courtesy visit on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, to the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha.

In a release signed by Chief Superintendent of Customs Isah Sulaiman,
Public Relations Officer (PRO), the visit was aimed at deepening collaboration in line with the three policy thrusts of Consolidation, Collaboration and Innovation of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

Speaking during the engagement, Comptroller Oshoba emphasized his resolve to consolidate on existing achievements and further strengthen the relationship between the Apapa Command and the Navy within the Lagos maritime corridor. He noted that modern border management demands robust inter-agency cooperation, stressing that while Customs is widely recognized for trade facilitation and revenue generation, it also plays a critical role in national security.

According to him, effective discharge of this mandate requires close collaboration with the military, describing the armed forces as the “mother of security.” He further explained that innovation another pillar of the CGC’s agenda—details adopting new approaches to achieve better outcomes, including stronger institutional partnerships.

The CAC commended the navy for safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial waters, noting that secured waterways are fundamental to port operations and international trade. He also sought continued naval support in maintaining security along the Apapa port corridor to guarantee seamless cargo movement and protect critical infrastructure.

In his response, Rear Admiral Mustapha acknowledged the enduring partnership between both agencies, underscoring that port security thrives on coordination and synergy. He maintained that without security, sustainable development would remain elusive.

The FOC also praised the Customs Service under CGC Adeniyi for blocking revenue leakages and surpassing national revenue targets, adding that increased revenue would translate into improved infrastructure and strengthened social safety nets.

He assured the Apapa Command of sustained and enhanced cooperation in securing the maritime domain in support of national economic growth.
