Nigeria’s return to IMO Council delights MARCON

The Maritime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (MARCON) has congratulated Nigeria on its re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, Category C, after 14 years.

MARCON, in a statement by President Ismail Aniemu and Secretary Olamide Osho, called the development a “historic achievement” reaffirming Nigeria’s role in global maritime governance.

The group attributed the victory that has brought Nigeria to Category C for the 2026–2027 biennium, marking the nation’s return to the global maritime decision-making body as mark of strategic leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, as well as the coordinated efforts of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to break this Jinx.

Oyetola’s diplomatic efforts with IMO member states and clear presentation of Nigeria’s maritime reform agenda secured the seat, MARCON said. The Ministry’s collaboration with maritime institutions also boosted the campaign.

MARCON also praised NIMASA for providing the technical and institutional backing that bolstered Nigeria’s bid. The association highlighted the agency’s progress in maritime safety administration, regulatory compliance, capacity building, and enhanced security in the Gulf of Guinea as factors that improved Nigeria’s international standing.

The organisation noted that Nigeria’s election into the IMO Council signifies global recognition of the nation’s improved maritime security profile and growing adherence to international standards. It said the Council membership offers Nigeria a fresh opportunity to influence global shipping policies and advance the interests of Africa and other developing maritime nations.

MARCON urged the Ministry and NIMASA to maximise the opportunity by deepening ongoing reforms, strengthening regional cooperation, and attracting more investment into the maritime and blue economy sector.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that drive sustainable growth in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
