MWUN reaffirms non-partisan stance as Tinubu 2027 Group pays courtesy visit

The leadership of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has reaffirmed its non-partisan position in political matters following a courtesy visit by members of the Transporters for Tinubu 2027 political support group to the union’s national secretariat in Apapa, Lagos.

The delegation met with the President-General of the union, Comrade Francis Bunu, at the MWUN headquarters located at 119 Osho Drive, Olodi-Apapa, where discussions focused on collaboration within Nigeria’s transport and logistics sector.

During the visit, the support group said its engagement with the maritime labour organisation formed part of efforts to build strategic partnerships among transport operators, government agencies and private sector stakeholders to support reforms aimed at improving national mobility and economic development.

The group also explained that the initiative was designed to promote grassroots participation in programmes associated with the policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the delegation, the Maritime Workers’ Union occupies a vital position within Nigeria’s transport ecosystem, particularly in port operations, shipping and water transportation, making it a critical stakeholder in discussions around national mobility and logistics development.

They further stated that the visit provided an opportunity to brief the union’s leadership on the vision, structure and programmes of the Transporters for Tinubu 2027 project.

Responding, Comrade Bunu appreciated the group for recognising the union’s role in the maritime sector but reiterated that MWUN remains a non-partisan labour organisation committed primarily to the welfare of its members and the advancement of good governance.

He noted that while the union does not align itself with political campaigns, it supports policies and initiatives that promote national unity, economic progress and the overall development of the country.

Bunu added that the Maritime Workers’ Union would continue to engage constructively with stakeholders across sectors where such interactions contribute to the growth of the maritime industry and the well-being of Nigerian workers.
