The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has been honoured with the “Impactful Leadership Award” by Landmark Africa Media Magazine in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.
The award, presented as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, celebrates Bunu’s outstanding leadership and influence within the maritime and labour sectors.
In a citation, the management of Landmark Africa Media Magazine described Comrade Bunu as one of the foremost labour leaders in the country, noting that his achievements within a relatively short period as President-General of MWUN have been remarkable.
In an e-signed release by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna,head of media, MWUN the publication commended his innovative approach, clarity of purpose and decisive leadership, which it said have brought renewed direction and stability to the maritime industry and the broader labour movement.

The media organisation further highlighted Bunu’s longstanding commitment to labour activism, tracing his journey from his early days as a junior-ranked member of the union to his current position as President-General.
According to the citation, his leadership style reflects practical trade unionism driven by action and results rather than rhetoric, making him a deserving recipient of the Impactful Leadership Award.
The publishers also described his accomplishments in the maritime sector as significant, especially considering the short time he has held office, adding that his strides represent meaningful progress for both the industry and the nation.
Represented at the award presentation by the Secretary-General of MWUN, Comrade Oniha Erazua, Bunu expressed gratitude to the management of Landmark Africa Media Magazine for the recognition.
He thanked the publishers for their insight into the maritime industry and for finding him worthy of the honour, describing the award as both humbling and motivating.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the welfare of maritime workers and strengthening the sector.
