Lagos building collapse: NSCDC commiserates with families

To this end, the Corps on Wednesday 3rd November on the directive of the CG, embarked on a search, rescue and operational visit, to the Gerrard road 21 – storey building collapse at Ikoyi Lagos, which occurred on Monday, 1st November, 2021.

In a release signed by the Lagos State NSCDC spokesperson, ASCI Abiodun Oluwaseun Olumide, made available to Nation Update, the Zonal Commander was also accompanied in the visit by the Deputy Commandant in – charge – of Crisis Management Department in the Command, Deputy Commandant Daniel Apeh, amidst other senior officers and men from the Lagos Zonal Headquarters and the state Command Headquarters.

The release stated, “Prior to today’s rescue and operational visit by the ACG and the Commandant, the Commandant, NSCDC, Lagos State Command, (CC) Eweka Okoro had urgently, earlier, directed the Head of Disaster Unit in the Command, Deputy Commandant Adefila James to deploy a wholesome number of personnel, to ensure there are no indiscriminate movements, especially, by hoodlums or criminal elements at the scene and to commence rescue operation and management, in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant disaster management stakeholders in the state.

“The personnel of the NSCDC Lagos State Command arrived at the scene at about ten (10) minutes, immediately, after the incident occurred. The speedy and timely response of the Command’s personnel was made possible to the scene as a result of the deployment of the personnel of proximable Divisional Offices to the construction site.

“The personnel of the Command drafted to the Gerrard road building collapse scene were drawn from the Lagos State Command Headquarters, led by the Disaster management unit and other neighbouring Divisional Headquarters close to the scene, in Ikoyi, Lagos.

“The Commandant also directed the personnel of the NSCDC Lagos State Command posted to the scene to keep vigilance on the search and rescue operation currently going on there and afterwards. Also they have also been charged to ensure they put on their eagle eyes, focussed towards the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure of the Federal, State and Local Government, in the Ikoyi area of the state, where the incident occurred.

“Finally, on behalf of the Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (CG) Ahmed Abubakar Audi Phd, mni, the ACG Zone A Lagos, commiserates with the Governor, His Excellency, Mr Babajide Sanwo – Olu and Government of Lagos State and the families and friends of the victims of the Gerrard road, Ikoyi, 21 – storey, high rise building collapse.

“He as well assures the good people of Lagos State of the continuous, proactive, timely and speedy response of the Corps towards managing disaster issues in the state. He also prays such disaster will no longer re-occur in the state,” the release stated.
