The Kogi State Government has commiserated with the families of six people killed in a road crash along the Kabba–Odo Ape Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, warning motorists against speeding and other dangerous driving practices.
The crash, which occurred on Saturday, involved a truck and a commercial vehicle. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that six people died in the accident, while two others sustained injuries.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital, Kabba.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, conveyed the government’s condolences in a statement on Sunday, saying Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo was deeply saddened by the tragedy.
Fanwo described the loss of lives as painful and unfortunate, saying the governor shared in the grief of the affected families and communities.
He prayed for the repose of the deceased and for God to grant their loved ones the strength to bear the loss, while wishing the injured victims a speedy recovery.
The commissioner urged motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly as the FRSC identified speeding as a contributing factor in the crash.
He warned that reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and driving while fatigued could turn routine journeys into fatal incidents.
Fanwo also called on the FRSC to intensify enforcement against over-speeding on highways across the state, alongside stronger public enlightenment and roadside monitoring to deter motorists from violating speed limits.
According to him, enhanced enforcement and sustained awareness campaigns would complement existing efforts by the FRSC and other stakeholders to reduce road crashes and protect lives.
He said the Kogi State Government remained committed to working with relevant agencies to improve road safety across the state.
Fanwo appealed to motorists and other road users to make safety their priority, stressing that no destination was worth risking human lives.
He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid unnecessary speed and dangerous manoeuvres, and exercise patience and responsibility on the highways.
