A new era of efficient trade has dawned in eastern Nigeria, as the Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) welcomes the MSC Dorine V, the first direct vessel from China and the Far East to the port.

The 5,089 TEU vessel is set to revolutionize the region’s shipping dynamics, offering importers shorter transit times, more predictable arrival windows, and significantly reduced freight costs.

The Liberian-flagged MSC Dorine V, with a deadweight tonnage of 68,383 tonnes and an overall length of 294 meters, berthed at OMT on November 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s maritime history.

According to Nicolo Scannavini, OMT’s Managing Director, this direct call will cut out delays, boost trade efficiency, and stimulate economic growth.

Industry experts believe such direct shipping to the eastern port will benefit the region and the country in many ways to include—Reduced shipping time for consignments, Lower freight charges, Direct discharge of cargo without transshipment delays and Enhanced reliability for businesses awaiting critical inputs among others.

How it boosts Nigeria’s economy

The direct shipping service is expected to boost Nigeria’s non-oil trade profile, reinforce the attractiveness of eastern ports, and create jobs. MSC’s Regional Manager, Oscar Aguocha, noted that the Eastern Nigerian market has grown by 27% year-on-year, and this new corridor will deliver speed, certainty, and cost-efficiency.

OMT’s Managing Director has appealed to the Nigerian Ports Authority to accelerate dredging works, creating a second turning basin and deeper draft access to accommodate larger vessels. This will cement Onne Port’s status as a strategic maritime hub, driving growth and competitiveness in the region.
