Datem College sparks interest in FRSC careers, enlists students as safety ambassadors

For Temitope Agbelusi, the proprietor of Datem Height Comprehensive College in Ikotun, Lagos, the recent induction of his students into the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as Road Safety Ambassadors was more than just a ceremony; it was the realization of a long-held dream to introduce young people to meaningful careers and civic responsibilities early on.

Standing in front of proud parents, teachers, and uniformed officers, Agbelusi reflected on a dream he never had the chance to experience as a child.

“I never had this kind of privilege while growing up; it was my earnest wish,” he said.

He continued, “As a school owner, I decided to create opportunities that will shape the future of these children. This program will guide them toward a brighter path.”

A School with a Vision Beyond the Classroom

Datem Height Comprehensive College has positioned itself as a center not just for academic success but also for character development and leadership training. By partnering with the FRSC Special Marshals, the school is expanding its students’ horizons by introducing them to structured national service, discipline, and potential career paths within the Corps.

Agbelusi described the inauguration of the FRSC club of his school as a long-awaited advancement for the school community.

“This is something we have desired for a long time. When the Unit Commander first visited, I did not realize it would lead to this amazing opportunity. Today, we are proud; the students are excited, and the parents are happy,” he said. Though 22 students initially expressed interest in joining the club, 15 were formally inducted due to logistical constraints.

The proprietor thanked the parents for their support, noting that such collaboration strengthens the school’s mission of all-around development.

Dr. Dennis Olabisi, the Lagos State Coordinator of Special Marshals, explained that the FRSC’s school outreach program aims to instill a culture of safety and leadership from an early age.

“When we teach them, they become ambassadors. Road safety is no longer just the job of uniformed officers; it is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.

Olabisi praised Peace House, Unit 67 Ikotun, for consistently promoting safety awareness. He revealed that Ikotun Command had set up two corps units in 2025, a feat unmatched by other commands in the state.

Planting Seeds of Leadership

Beyond the formal speeches, the highlight of the event was the excitement of the newly inducted ambassadors. For many, the program signifies both responsibility and inspiration.

Oleide Alimashao, a Senior Secondary School 3(SS 3) student, stated she plans to educate her peers and community members on traffic management and safe road habits.

“This opportunity has helped shape our future,” she said proudly.

Another student described the induction as a stepping stone to becoming part of a generation that values safety and discipline.

Building Futures Through Exposure

For Agbelusi, the success of the event lies not just in the certificates given but in the seeds planted. By incorporating civic engagement activities like the FRSC club into school life, Datem Height Comprehensive College is intentionally guiding students to be aware of national issues and open to careers in public service.

“We are laying foundations for something greater,” the proprietor reiterated.

“If even one of these students grows up to serve in the FRSC or becomes a responsible leader because of this exposure, then we have achieved something meaningful.”

In a community where road safety challenges remain a daily concern, Datem College’s proactive approach reflects a broader belief: leadership, discipline, and career ambition can start in the classroom, often with a simple commitment to make the roads safer for everyone.
