BREAKING: Ex – Lagos, Imo governor, NADCO chieftain dies

The death has been confirmed of the former Military Governor of Lagos and Imo States, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd.), at the age of 77.

Confirming the death of the pro-democracy activist and National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) chieftain, Mrs Joe Okei-Odumakin a close alley of his confirmed the news and said its sad indeed.

“our elder statesman has passed on, we are saddened by this news. We await statement that will be issued on that soon.” Okei-Odumakin said.

Kanu was appointed into the Supreme Military Council headed by the late Head of State, Gen. Murtala Muhammed in 1975, He later became a human rights activist after leaving the military.

After the annulment of the June 12 election, the Committee for Unity and Understanding (CUU) formed not long after the Babangida transition-to-civil-rule programme with such founders as himself, Mr. Ayo Opadokun, Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Lulu Briggs, Chief Sam Mbakwe, Alhaji Abdulazeez Ude, Ambassador Tanko Yusuf, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe and General Theophilus Danjuma.

The CUU along with several other groups as: the Movement for National Reformation (MNR), led by Chief Anthony Enahoro, Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba, led by General Adeyinka Adebayo, Afenifere, led by Chief Michael Ajasin, the Progressive Alliance for Justice and Unity (PAJU), Justice Forum and National Patriotic Front (NPF) came together to form NADECO at GRA, Ikeja on 15 May, 1994.

Through NADECO, they formed themselves to a symbol of mass resistance against military rule. They came out with a mandate to prevail on the military government of General Sani Abacha to step down and hand over power to M. K.O. Abiola, winner of the June 12 1993 election.
