By Ezurike Ugochukwu

Young table tennis players from Kogi State have continued to announce their arrival on the continental stage, producing an impressive medal haul for Nigeria at the recently concluded African Youth Table Tennis Championship and African Cup in Accra, Ghana.

The youngsters distinguished themselves against some of Africa’s finest emerging talents, combining technical skill, determination and competitive discipline to secure medals in both team and individual events.

Their performances have further strengthened Kogi State’s reputation for grassroots table tennis development and highlighted the potential of sustained investment in youth sports.

At the African Youth Table Tennis Championship, Joseph Victor and Joseph Marvelous combined to win the gold medal in the U-15 Boys’ Doubles, delivering a commanding performance against their continental counterparts.

The duo also joined forces with Samson Joshua and Umar Ayoola of Lagos State to win a silver medal in the U-15 Boys’ Team Event, further demonstrating the strength and depth of Nigeria’s young table tennis talents.

Samson Joshua was also outstanding in the individual competitions. He won bronze in the U-15 Boys’ Singles and another bronze medal in the U-15 Boys’ Doubles, partnering Umar Ayoola of Lagos.

He added another medal in the U-15 Mixed Doubles, where he partnered Chinoye Okafor of Abia State to claim bronze.

The impressive run continued at the African Cup, where Samson Joshua secured another bronze medal in the U-15 Boys’ Singles, while Ize Aziza Sezuo also won bronze in the U-15 Girls’ Singles.

The performances represent a significant achievement for the young players and their coaches, coming after years of training, competition and exposure to increasingly demanding tournaments.

The progress of the players has also been linked to the efforts of their coaches, particularly Coach Friday Abah, who has played a key role in identifying, nurturing and preparing the young athletes for elite competitions.

The Chairman of the Kogi State Table Tennis Association, Dr. Shaibu D. Mohammed, has equally been commended for his financial support, motivation and commitment to grassroots development.

His support, according to stakeholders, has helped create opportunities for the young players to train, participate in competitive tournaments and gain the exposure required to develop into elite athletes.

The latest success provides another indication of what can be achieved when youthful talent is supported with quality coaching, regular competition and sustained investment.

For Kogi State, the medals are not merely individual achievements but a reflection of the possibilities inherent in a structured grassroots sports development programme.

With continued support and greater exposure, the young players could progress to represent Nigeria at major continental and global competitions, including the African Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and World Championships.

Their success also comes at a time when Nigeria continues to search for a sustainable pathway for discovering and developing the next generation of sporting talents.

The achievements of the Kogi youngsters therefore underscore the importance of moving beyond occasional participation in competitions to establishing consistent systems for talent identification, coaching, equipment, competition exposure and athlete welfare.

The players, Coach Friday Abah, Dr. Shaibu D. Mohammed, the Kogi State Table Tennis Association, their families and other supporters deserve commendation for their contribution to the remarkable outing in Ghana.

For the young stars themselves, however, the medals could represent only the beginning of a much bigger journey—from promising grassroots talents in Kogi to established names on the African and international table tennis circuit.
