MWUN: Comrade Abass condemns ‘slave drive’ labour practices in maritime sector

Maritme Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Shipping Branch President Comrade Olufemi Oluyinka Abass, has frowned at employers’ “casualization” of maritime workers, described same as “Slave Drive”.

Comrade Abass, a soft-spoken but sharp Maritimer said employers are outsourcing workers to contractors who pay peanuts, by so doing flout labour rules against casualisation.

Abbas said, “The Shipping sector and Terminal Operators keep using cruel labour practices that break laws. These industry chief executives justify their wicked acts by dehumanizing workers and pushing unions out.”

These unethical labour practices he said have eroded permanent jobs in the sector, revealed that the bosses think casualising workers is cheap & profitable, that dehumanizing them to boost profits, ignoring decent work policies in local & global labour laws is the best.

Comrade Abass vowed that the union’s top leadership will be informed; and strict action’s planned against these perpetrators to improve maritime workers’ conditions.
