Security Breaches: NIMASA closes ShellPlux,TMDK Terminals over ISPS code violations

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has shut down ShellPlux and TMDK Terminals in Ijegun-Egba area of Lagos for persistently violating the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

The agency’s Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized NIMASA’s commitment to maritime safety and security, stating that the shutdown underscores the agency’s resolve to enforce strict protocols across Nigerian ports and jetties.

The enforcement action he said followed ShellPlux and TMDK Terminals failure to address formal repeated warnings that the facilities failed to address.

In a press statement signed by the Head, Public Relations( of NIMASA, Osagie Edward, FNIPR, their shutdown is in line with Section 79(f) of the ISPS Code Implementation Regulations (2014), which mandates the closure of any non-compliant facility for over three consecutive months.

Director-General Mobereola, said the move underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to maritime safety and security.

He added, “In wielding the big stick, we acted only as a last resort. Our priority is to enforce strict safety and security protocols across Nigerian ports and jetties.

“As we work closely with the United States Coast Guard to lift the conditions of entry on vessels from Nigeria, we cannot afford any security lapses that could undermine our progress.”

He further assured that the terminals will be reopened once they meet all compliance requirements, acknowledging their significance to trade and logistics.

He further reiterated the federal government’s broader commitment to safe and sustainable maritime operations under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

The ISPS Code, developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is a key amendment to the SOLAS Convention aimed at bolstering maritime and port security, particularly for facilities involved in international shipping.
