Tin Can Customs generates N299b in four months, beats N195b of 2022, targets N376b in 2024

…Poised to achieve N1.130tr year target
…. Records N489.2b goods export

The Nigerian Customs Service(NCS), Tin Can Island Command has revealed that between September 2023 and December 2023, it generated over N299billion naira revenue far above the N195billion it generated within the same period in 2022.

The turn around in revenue generation was experienced at the command with the deployment of Comptroller Dera Nnadi as the Area Controller of the Command in September 2023.

In a release made available to Nation Update, the command raked in N299, 776, 710, 548.86 from September to December 2023 as against N195,696,851,739.74 it collected within the same period in 2022, closing the calendar year with a landmark year revenue generation of N716,479,007,576.74 In 2023 above the 574,385,069,675.40 generated in 2022.

the Command assured that with current digitisation of all customs processes and procedures and the recent introduction of 24 hour work operations, it is poised to generate over N376billion within the same four months period in 2024 and also achieve the N1.130 trillion revenue allotted to it in the 2024 fiscal year.

On it’s core responsibilities of facilitation of legitimate trade, revenue collection and enhancement of capacity and skills of officers and men, it expressed commitment towards achieving them in line with Comptroller General Bashir Adeniyi, reform agenda.
“The target allocated to Tincan Island Port command out of the national target is 27 per cent.

“Last year 2023, our revenue target was N801.5 billion out of which we were able to collect N716.5 billion which represents 89 per cent of our target.

“However, in 2024, due to our hard work, following our beautiful performance in 2023, the Controller General of Customs (CGC) and its management, allocated a revenue target of N1.130 trillion to us,”he said.

Nandi tagged the year as year of stakeholders expressed that for the command to meet up with the said revenue target, it is expected to generate over N94 billion every week and over N94.230 billion every month as revenue.

He enjoined Nigerians to support and encourage export of goods stating that it recorded N489.2 billion export of goods in 2023 which he described as the beacon upon which the economy of the nation rests.

Recounting the performance of the previous year, Nnadi maintained that the command deployed capacity building for officers and stakeholders as one of the tools to achieving its mandate.
The command he added would map out strategies to ensure quick clearance of goods at the ports to avoid demureage this time around.

“In 2023, the command was able to handle 623694.7 metric tonnes of export.

“This is very significant in the sense that it is 85 per cent increase in tonnage of what we did in 2022,” he said.

Shedding light on the areas of enforcement and Anti-smuggling activities of the Command, he stated that total of 96 detentions and 47 seizures were made in the year under review as: 1264 packages weighing 473.50kg of Colorado (Cannabis Indica )with a street value of =N=118,381,184.00concealed in various containers from 8 seizures, 10 sacks of used clothing, used fridges and others with a DPV of =N=3,170,821.

It acknowledge roles played by customs and other sister agencies in achieving the feat. “the critical role played by the Customs Intelligence Unit, the Valuation unit, Customs Strike force, FOU as well as interventions by sister regulatory agencies such as NDLEA, NAFDAC, DSS, SON, the Nigeria Police and others in making some of the seizures and detentions possible.”
