TCN reveals cause of blackout in Lagos, assures power supply restoration

The Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN) has revealed the cause of blackout in Lagos and other cities as collapse of three towers during windy rainfall.

The Ikeja West-Osogbo 330 kV line tripped off resulting in a load loss of 165 megawatts.

According to a statement signed by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Friday, the incident happened on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at approximately 9:22 pm at a distance of about 14.9km from the Ikeja-West transmission substation.

The statement read, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria announces that on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at approximately 9:22 pm, the Ikeja-West/Osogbo 330 kV line tripped at a distance of about 14.9 km from Ikeja-West Transmission Substation. The incident occurred during windy rainfall, resulting in a load loss of 165 MW.”

Mbah revealed a thorough investigation, revealing extensive damage to Tower 528, which collapsed due to a trailer truck hitting detached conductors on Tower 527.

The incident also affected Tower 526 and Tower 524.

TCN further assured affected customers that repairs on affected towers are ongoing to ensure normal bulk power supply to Ikeja, Eko, and Ibadan DISCOs.

“Our engineers are working diligently to repair the affected towers and ensure normal bulk power supply to Ikeja, Eko, and Ibadan DISCOs. The TCN remains committed to providing efficient and reliable transmission of bulk electricity nationwide,” it added.

Meanwhile, the 165 MW load loss has already been diverted through other lines to the affected DISCOs to minimise the impact of the incident on the affected DISCOs.
