Shippers’ body meets NSC, seeks functional rail network, Baro Port revival

The Abuja Shippers’ Association has met with the management team of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) to discuss challenges facing shippers, including financial losses and poor infrastructure.

The association’s president, Mr. John Ugwu, highlighted the need for a functional rail network and the operationalization of the Baro Inland Port.

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Akutah Pius, while receiving his the delegation explained efforts to improve rail transport and address the port’s dredging requirements.

Dr. Akutah speaks on the ongoing collaboration with the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to improve rail transport and explained that the Baro Inland Port is yet to become operational due to the capital-intensive dredging required.

He also clarified that the Council does not control interest rates, while he assured to raise the issue with the Bank of Industry.

Dr. Pauline Osasona, Deputy Director of the Abuja Liaison Office in his speech highlighted the perks of joining a Shippers’ Association which include- advocacy, trade facilitation, cost efficiency, information sharing, dispute resolution, and networking opportunities.

These benefits he said can help shippers navigate Nigeria’s complex maritime landscape and stay competitive.
