LASWA, partners collaborate on CNG hybrid vessels for cleaner water transportation

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has taken a significant step towards sustainable marine mobility by convening along with the state ministry of Transportation a strategic engagement with key stakeholders to promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-Petrol hybrid vessels in Omi-Bus ferries.

An initiative that formed part of the Lagos State’s efforts to decarbonize its marine ecosystem and promote sustainable water transportation.

The event held today Wednesday 9 July 2025 brought together representatives from the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), RHKL/CNG4Marine, and infrastructure investors to discuss the feasibility of retrofitting existing ferries and deploying CNG refueling infrastructure across Lagos.

However, a live demonstration of the BGM CNG Hybrid Dual Fuel System showcased the potential of hybrid marine technology in reducing emissions and fuel costs.

The stakeholders deliberated on safety protocols, regulatory frameworks, and scalable strategies to accelerate CNG adoption within the inland waterways transport sector.

This initiative no doubt aligns with Nigeria’s national low-emission mobility objectives and reinforces Lagos State’s commitment to becoming a leader in clean, innovative, and sustainable water transportation.

By promoting the use of CNG-powered ferries, LASWA aims to reduce the environmental impact of marine transportation in Lagos while also improving the efficiency and sustainability of the sector.
