COVID-19: Malaysia police arrests hundreds of migrants, to contain spread

To contain the spread of the novel global coronavirus, the Malaysian government through its police on Friday arrested undocumented hundreds of migrants and refugees in the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.
The Malaysian Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador however said, after hundreds of migrants and refugees were detained in the capital city, that police officers wearing protective suits pick up a migrant worker from an apartment under enhanced lockdown in downtown in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
According to a rights group spokesperson, “over 700 migrants were taken into custody, including young children and ethnic Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, during Friday’s raid in a downtown area where thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers live.”
However, the police chief said, “We cannot allow them to move freely… as it will be difficult for us to track them down if they leave identified locations,”
He stated that those detained would be placed at a single location for monitoring until lockdown is lifted.
