COVID-19 Lockdown: Nigeria records 3,600 rape cases, states recorded 100 each – Minister

The alarming rate at which rape cases were reported all over the country during the coronavirus lockdown has been condemned in no mistaken terms.
Pauline Tallen, Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, who condemned such upsurge that witnessed no fewer than 3, 600 cases of rape Nationwide during the lockdown.

She further decry as worrisome such revelation that each state of the federation recorded at least, 100 rape cases during the period.
The Minister disclosed this when she visited the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, in his office in Abuja on Monday.
The minister said, “Reports that we received from commissioners of women affairs across the 36 states of the federation revealed that each state recorded at least, 100 rape cases during the coronavirus induced lockdown.”
Tallen gave kudos to the Deputy Senate President for sponsoring the sexual harassment bill passed last week in the Senate.
For declaring state of emergency on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, the minister commended the Nigeria Governors Forum, she also called for more legislation to protect womenfolk in general, and girl-child in particular.
Omo-Agege said the bill was passed in an avowed determination of the 9th Senate to stand strongly against Sexual harassment and to protect women’s right.
He said the proposed law, would not only send a strong signal to those who may want to abuse women but will also ensure that students are not at the mercy of ‘sexual predators’. at schools.
The Bill is meant to prevent, prohibit, and redress sexual harassment of students in tertiary institutions.The bill passed on the 7 July, 2020 by the Senate prescribes N5m fine for offenders. prohibits sexual harassment of students in tertiary institutions and prescribes jail term ranging from two to 14 years for various degrees of offences.
