Pregnant woman rescued from suicide attempt gets relief

A 20-year-old pregnant lady, Oluchi Akabilo, from Anambra State who allegedly drank poison after discovering that the person who impregnated was a married man has got succour from a rights group.

Oluch, a native of Obosi, allegedly took a liquid substance suspected to be insecticide in a bid to take her own life following abandonment by her boyfriend, simply identified as Chinedu.

According to the Chairman Board of Trustee , Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’ Foundation ( HURIDE), Comrade Dede Uzor, the group had placed the lady on a weekly maintenance stipend.

Uzor said :”The Human Rights defenders has established contact with Awada Divisional Police Officer over the victim’s challenges. We have placed her on weekly stipend until she is delivered off her baby .

“In as much as the girl acted stupidly, we will pay the hospital bill on her day of delivery in support of our cause. Police spokesperson in the state, Haruna Mohammed said efforts were on to apprehended the fleeing boyfriend.

“He said the victim was rushed to a hospital in the area by the police where doctors commenced treating her”, he said.
