Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has charged the newly elected chairmen of the state’s 21 local government areas to strengthen rural security, ensure transparency in public spending and prioritise development at the grassroots.
Ododo gave the charge on Wednesday through his deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, during the swearing-in ceremony of the council chairmen at the Glass House, Government House, Lokoja.
The governor urged the council leaders to work closely with security agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders to protect lives and property, declaring that no community in the state should be abandoned to criminal activities.
He also identified rural road development, primary healthcare, basic education and environmental sanitation as key areas requiring urgent attention, urging the chairmen to implement programmes that create opportunities for youths and women.
Congratulating the newly elected officials, Ododo commended the people of Kogi State for their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), which, according to him, secured all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 21 local government areas and 239 wards.
He described the electoral victory as a call to greater responsibility, urging the chairmen to justify the confidence reposed in them by fulfilling their campaign promises and delivering tangible benefits to their constituents.
Ododo further emphasised the need for prudent management of public resources, insisting that the council chairmen must remain transparent, accountable, humble and accessible to the people.
He urged them to govern fairly and avoid discrimination against residents on the basis of political affiliation, stressing the importance of inclusive leadership in promoting development across the state.
The governor also expressed confidence in continued support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and APC candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections and state House of Assembly polls.
He commended Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to national development through the Renewed Hope Agenda, while wishing the newly sworn-in chairmen successful tenures.
Ododo assured the council leaders of the state government’s support, particularly in advancing development initiatives and improving service delivery at the grassroots.

The swearing-in marks the beginning of a new phase in local government administration in Kogi State, with expectations that the elected officials will translate their electoral mandates into improved security, responsible governance and better public services for residents.
