BREAKING: Court nullifies Natasha’s six-month senate suspension
…slams her ₦5 Million contempt fine
A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared the six-month suspension of Kogi State Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan invalid, ordering the Senate to reinstate her immediately.
Justice Binta Fatima Nyako ruled that the suspension breached constitutional provisions and left her constituents without proper representation.
The court also found Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt and fined her ₦5 million, requiring her to publish a public apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page.
The ruling came in response to a legal action filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had contested the Senate’s decision to suspend her for half a year.
According to the judge, although the National Assembly holds the authority to take disciplinary action against its members, such measures must not be so severe that they effectively silence the voice of a constituency.
She added that the six-month suspension was disproportionate, noting that it surpassed the maximum 180 legislative days the chamber is allowed to convene annually.
