Customs delves into airport illegal transaction, identifies culprit, commences investigation

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has confirmed that the officer allegedly involved in a bribery incident at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport is truly a member of the Nigeria Customs Service, specifically assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command in Lagos.

In an official statement provided to Nation Update, the Chief Superintendent of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada acting on behalf of the Comptroller General of Customs, affirmed that a thorough investigation is underway regarding the incident at the airport. The officer in question was observed soliciting a ₦5000 bribe from a passenger, a behaviour strongly condemned by the Customs.

The incident occurred within the departure hall of the New Terminal at the airport and was documented by the passenger involved in a video recording. The recording reveals the officer making an inappropriate request for ₦5000 in exchange for expediting customs procedures.

Expressing utmost disapproval of such unprofessional conduct, the NCS reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism. A comprehensive investigation is in progress to thoroughly address the incident, and appropriate measures will be taken accordingly.

The NCS emphasized that such behaviour contradicts the core values of their service, and they are unwavering in their dedication to maintaining a transparent and accountable customs operation. They urged passengers and the public to promptly report any instances of misconduct or corruption, highlighting the significance of these reports in preserving the service’s integrity and ensuring officers adhere to ethical standards.

Stressing their steadfast commitment to fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, the NCS assured the public that the investigation’s findings will be communicated at the earliest opportunity.
