Covid-19: Archbishop Martins lauds govt over reopening of churches, Appeals faithful to obey rules

The Catholic Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, has thanked the Lagos State Government for heeding to the calls of the people by announcing the reopening of churches amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The clergyman handed down the commendation on Sunday, 14th June, 2020, during his live homily on the Solemnity of the Holy Eucharist, on Lumen Christi Television, the church’s family television.

Archbishop Adewale, said the government took a wise decision to re-open worship centres in the state with effect from the 21st of June, so that people would gather to worship God.

“I want to commend the Lagos State for listening to the yearnings and spiritual needs of the faithful. And we dearly look forward to going to Mass once again to gather together as a people to celebrate the Holy Eucharist.” He said.

The man of God stated that after total lockdown of three months in Lagos, Ogun States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which affected worships, it is gratifying to hear the government re-open churches on June 21st.

He called on the Catholic faithful and members of other Christian denominations to coperate with church authorities who will implement the government directives on COVID-19 for restoration of public worship.

“We therefore, appeal to our people that when we begin to gather as limited as it may be, we should Coperate with the priests and lay readers who will implement the directives for restoration of public worship.”

“We must also ensure we are free from Coronavirus infection, let everyone follow the guidelines provided by the Lagos State Government for the good of everyone that we go to church and remain safe and healthy.”

Archbishop Adewale advised the elderly people from 65 years and above to stay at home as stipulated by the government regulations to prevent them from being infected with the virus, adding that the Church would provide their spiritual needs and cares.

“For the elderly once above 65 years that are exempted from going to church. I want to assure you that we have you in mind. We shall continue to think about meeting your spiritual needs and cares,” He said.
